What to Check Before You Drive Off the Rental Lot
Five minutes at the lot can save you a damage dispute later. Run through this before you pull away.
1. Document existing damage
Walk around the car and photograph every scratch, dent and chip — plus the wheels and roof. Make sure each is noted on the rental agreement. Timestamped photos are your protection.
2. Check fuel and mileage
Confirm the fuel level matches the contract (and note the policy), and that the odometer reading is recorded.
3. Tires and lights
Glance at tire condition (and in winter, confirm they're winter tires), and test headlights, signals and brake lights.
4. Interior and controls
Check for warning lights on startup, locate the spare/repair kit, and adjust mirrors before you move.
5. Keep your paperwork
Have the agreement, the agency's emergency/roadside number, and proof of insurance handy.
Use the readiness checklist before pickup, and in winter run the winter readiness check too.
