What Do You Need to Rent a Car in Ontario?
Renting for the first time? Here's everything you need to walk out with the keys in Ontario.
1. A valid driver's licence
A full Ontario Class G (or equivalent from another province/country) is required, usually held for at least one year. Visitors can drive on a valid foreign licence; if it's not in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit.
2. Minimum age
Most agencies rent to drivers 21+ (some 25+) and add a young-driver fee for those under 25. A few will rent to 18โ20 with restrictions. More on renting under 25 โ
3. A credit card
A credit card in the renter's name is standard for the security deposit. Some locations accept debit with extra ID or proof of return travel โ but it's not guaranteed. Debit card rentals explained โ
4. The deposit (hold)
Expect a temporary pre-authorization on your card โ often a few hundred dollars โ released after you return the car.
5. Decide on insurance and vehicle class
Know whether you'll take the waiver, and which vehicle you need. Use the vehicle finder and the readiness checklist so nothing slows you down at the counter.
