Economy vs SUV: Which Rental Is Right for Northern Ontario?
It's the most common question at the rental counter in Sudbury: do you really need an SUV, or will a compact car do? The honest answer depends on four things — the season, where you're driving, how many people you have, and your budget.
When an economy car is the smart pick
If you're staying mostly in town — Sudbury, North Bay, the Soo — and renting between late spring and early fall, a compact or economy car is almost always the better value. You'll pay $45–65/day versus $89+ for an SUV, burn far less fuel, and parking is easier. For solo travellers and couples on paved roads, an economy car is plenty.
When to upgrade to an SUV or AWD
- Winter (November–April): Northern Ontario winters are no joke. AWD plus winter tires gives real traction on snow-packed highways like 17, 69 and 11.
- Rural and cottage roads: Heading to French River, Killarney, Manitoulin back roads or a hunting camp? Ground clearance matters.
- Groups and gear: Three-plus passengers with luggage, sports equipment or coolers will appreciate the cargo room.
The middle ground
A mid-size sedan or a crossover splits the difference: more space and comfort than a compact, better fuel economy than a full SUV. For longer regional drives in fair weather, it's often the sweet spot.
