Driving to Manitoulin Island: A Rental Guide
Manitoulin Island is one of the best day-or-weekend trips from Sudbury. Here's how to get there and what to rent.
Two ways onto the island
- The swing bridge at Little Current โ the year-round road route via Espanola and Highway 6. About 1.5โ2 hours from Sudbury.
- The Chi-Cheemaun ferry โ connects Tobermory (Bruce Peninsula) to South Baymouth, seasonal. Great for a loop trip, but reserve vehicle space ahead.
What to rent
Main roads are paved, so an economy or mid-size car handles most visits. If you plan to explore gravel side roads to beaches and trailheads, an SUV is more comfortable. Travelling as a group? Consider a van or minivan.
Don't miss
Bridal Veil Falls, the Cup and Saucer Trail, Providence Bay beach, and the towns of Little Current, Gore Bay and Mindemoya โ all of which we cover in the Manitoulin directory.
Plan your drive time and fuel with the trip planner, then book a vehicle through the directory.
